Artistic & Creative Events

In parallel with our conference, artists, academics, and practitioners will present their work in alternative and creative formats to narrate their perspectives on motherhood, childbirth, and reproductive justice.

During the week of the conference, we will feature an art exhibition by Mexican artists and midwives, curated by anthropologist Yaredh Marín (Colegio de México), entitled “Urban Midwives and Midwifery Centers: Territories, Sensitivity, and Care.” The exhibition will be displayed in the Geopolis Building on the 2nd floor.

"The collection of photos, oil paintings, and installations diversify the idea of “the midwife,” as they highlight the particularities of these care practices according to the territories and populations they serve. Through the pieces, and the sensitivity with which they portray midwives and their daily lives, we can rediscover their workspaces, tools, skills, and knowledge. It is worth mentioning that the exhibition is the result of a decade of ethnographic work carried out by Yaredh Marín, curator of the exhibition.
The work of the photographers, artists, designers, communication specialists, and anthropologists highlights the contemporary nature of midwifery and challenges the public to question: access to health care, the fulfillment of sexual and reproductive rights, and the challenges midwives face in gaining sustainable social, political, and economic autonomy in their work. The exhibition coincides with the recent publication of NOM-020, which establishes guidelines for the work of midwives and the operation of midwifery centers. This phenomenon accentuates the disputes and ruptures in which midwives practice. We hope that this synchronicity will allow for a framework of debate on the processes of regulation for the benefit of health and the safeguarding of this interwoven knowledge and care."

At the end of the first day of the conference from 5 to 5:30 PM, we will welcome Aurélia Gervasoni who will perfom to poetic performances entitled "The Hand on my Belly" and "Ursula Buendía the Matriarch". She is a poet and legal scholar from the University of Zurich. In her poetic work, she often explores themes of womanhood, gender, and the body. The maternal experience — imagined, feared, lived, lost — holds a central place in her writing.

On the second day of the event, Tuesday, October 21, from 9:15 AM to 5:30 PM, we will have two simultaneous workshops on “Body Mapping: Exploring Embodied Experiences for Practicioners and Researchers,” led by Elisabeth Dittman and Annekatrin Skeide. The workshop will take place in the Geopolis building, in rooms 2215 and 2218. The objective of the workshop is to create spaces in which birth assistance and its research are understood as sets of relational, embodied, and creative practices and techniques of care (and research). This workshop aims to create spaces in which birth attendance and its research are understood as sets of relational, embodied, and creative care (and research) practices and techniques.

"In this workshop, we address the following questions for practitionners: How do our bodies engage in tinkering when attending birth? How are our bodies shaped by our tinkering experiences in birthing care?
Researchers will also have the opportunity to ponder about the following questions: How do our bodies engage in tinkering when researching birthing and birth attendance? How are our bodies shaped by our tinkering experiences when studying birthing (care)? To explore these questions, we use the method of body-mapping – a visual technique that helps us express, share and reflect on our embodied experiences, emotions and stories through creative body illustrations and discussions."

On Wednesday 22 from 5:40 to 6:00 PM, we will screen the trailer for a documentary entitled “Telling the history of a remarkable experience: the Sofia Feldman Hospital (Brazil)” followed by a discussion with the director Juliana Coelho. Juliana Coelho is a director, researcher, and teacher. She holds a degree in Performing Arts from the School of Fine Arts at UFMG, as well as a PhD and a master's degree from the University of Paris 8. She is currently fi nalising a postdoctoral research project in the Anthropology Department at the University of São Paulo. She is also finalizing thedocumentary film Sofia, about Sofia Feldman Hospital, a model maternity hospital established on the outskirts of Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
